>>The computer supervisor at a Midwestern engine manufacturing company
approached his bosses last month and made them an offer they could not refuse. Either they gave him a big raise immediately and agreed to a list of other job demands, or he would shut the company down, according to Erik Thompson, a computer security consultant who was called in to help the firm after the incident.<<

Something like this actually happened recently at a small New Jersey company producing high-precision machined parts for the aerospace and defence industries.

They had a real techno-whiz, hired right out of high school twelve years ago, who controlled all the software...including design specifications and the software controlling the precision machining equipment.

After a dispute, the company fired him. But prior to being fired, he inserted a software bomb that a few weeks later permanently deleted everything.

Of course, he was arrested and convicted. But the company almost went under and still hasn't fully recovered.

The guy who did it is sitting in jail with a wife and two kids at home with big problems to deal with. But he sure showed them a thing or two by golly.
