FYI-BT<BT.L>sees year 2000 costing around 300 mln stg

LONDON, May 20 (Reuters) - British Telecommunications Plc
<BT.L> said on Wednesday that ensuring its systems were
compliant with the new millennium date change would cost the
company around 300 million pounds.
BT told a news conference that its compliance programme,
which it began in 1995, should be complete by the end of this
year.
The so-called "millennium bug" problem arises because
computer systems with a two-digit date field recognise year 2000
as year 1900 or another default date like 1980.
The problem may also affect machines that have embedded chip
technology.
