Convergence issues..... Philips is adopting a number of TV/PC convergence models focused on entertainment but also has intentions to enter digital commerce:techweb.cmp.com My read is that Zenith is waiting to introduce its 32" SDTVw model prior to or when entering the convergence game. With good reason. You can have the best Internet access in the world displayed on your TV but without digital reception and a high quality receiver, the graphics look terrible. Cable companies which offer their customers HFC on a two-way basis will be the primary beneficiaries of TV/Internet convergence. They'll have the fattest pipe, in both directions, for the time being. On the horizon, IBM is coming out with a special copper cable that, apparently, is wide enough to deliver a remarkable 500 stations of HDTV programming! Appears that we will have two very separate DTV models during the next decade. One is the HDTV model, focused on delivering the highest quality video and audio. These sets all will be large projection models mostly geared for home entertainment. This is the model that the CE manufacturers will be focusing on during the next 12 months. The second model is the SDTV/Internet model which will have smaller screens (20" to 36"), direct-view/table & desk-top types, and will have a seamless interface between DTV broadcasters and ISPs. Too early to determine the eventual browser winner. Could be anyone including from a "kid in Delhi"..Broadcasters aren't too happy to see this model introduced since their already fractured viewing base would lose additional market share to such Internet hits as "Jennicam". Appears that Zenith has all it's bases covered (no idea, however, about LGE/ZE intentions re Internet commerce). Patience, still, is required...
