Land Warrior Applications and Other Things Hi, it's a cold Sunday here in Washington, so I was checking out potential applications for Microvision. Do I love this company or what? Anyway, my investigation for the day was looking at the work the Army has been doing on Land Warrior Systems. Land Warrior is an effort to better equip our soldiers for the digital battlefield. Sound familiar? Well, I found a pretty good summary of the program at the following two locations:www-sscom.army.mil dcmilitary.com The stated goal of this program is to fully equip our soldiers with off-the-shelf technologies by the year 2000. That seems pretty aggressive, but these guys appear serious. If you read the links from the above web sites, you'll see that a part of this initiative is to equip our soldiers with a helmet mounted display. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean a VRD display, but VRD's promise of creating a high quality, portable, low power consumption display gives it a potential leg-up on the competition. In other reading, I've learned that there are two other initiative underway called Air Warrior and Mounted Warrior. There is interest in combining these programs, but that has not happened yet. I excerpted the following from an article on the subject. "The Air Warrior system will be designed to work with 13 types of helicopters, including the RAH-66 Comanche, OH-58D Kiowa Warrior and different versions of the AH-64 Apache and UH-60 Black Hawk. Mounted Warrior, still in concept development, will be used on several systems, including the Crusader self-propelled howitzer, Abrams tank and Bradley fighting vehicle." As you know Microvision is in the running to be the display of choice for the Comanche program. Now we now have further evidence that the Military intends to implement this type of technology into existing weapons systems as well. This has two major benefits. One, it considerably broadens the market. Two, it would be unwise to hang one's fate on the development of a single weapon system. The Company, of course, knows about these applications. In fact they listed the "Digital Land Warrior System" as a potential application for VRD in their 1996 annual report. Here's to warmer days! Stephan
