Apple demands in-store advocacy.

The above article was insightful on Apples new marketing approach.

I went to CompUSA in Edison, NJ this past weekend with a friend who went to buy an Adobe product. She was impressed with what they had done, but I'm always the picky one.

I didn't like the aisles of the Apple Store-Within-the-Store being cluttered with excess Wintel software and peripherals. There weren't enough knowledgeable sales staff to support the customers there (is this good?). I couln't find a copy of the Journeyman Project on CD. (I'll have to use mail-order - been trying to avoid the shipping charges and boost CompUSA's Apple sales to encourage support).

On a positive note, I heard a couple talking about how they've seen two 6500's sold within 20 minutes. I myself pitched the 8600/300 to someone thinking about buying the lower-end G3. I thought it was a better fit for what she wanted to do.

I'd like to see Apple move out of their protected Apple Reservation and spill into the Wintel aisle with a direct G3 vs Pentium II challenge. Imagine something like a carnival show with two caged animals slugging it out.

The Apple rep could purchase a Compaq right off the shelf (If they purchase, does Compaq have any legal gripes that their machine was used in such a demo?" and run an off the shelf G3 in front of a live crowd. "You sir! could you examine this Jaz disk and verify that it is indeed a standard 1 Gig Jaz disk? Now watch carefully as I connect the Jaz drive and boot up the G-3 without any special driver installations. <after he load the huge graphic files, he ejects the disk and moves on to the PC> Please bear with me ladies and gents as Ralph my assistant installs the SCSI interface card and necessary drivers and adaptors to the PC and Jaz drive. If you have other other shopping to do, please come back in 20 minutes - please do not attempt this yourself. Ralph is a trained PC professional...

They could have a huge digital clock timing down to when the show resumes and people can come back to watch the Pentium get toasted!
