Phil White had the best analogy: "it's like trying to take two one-legged men, tying them together, and expecting to get a guy who dances like Fred Astaire." He was refering to the Powersoft-Sybase merger in 1994, but he also explained why is own Illustra-Informix merger would not work. Illustra had a interesting product that did not work; Informix had a series of failed products (XPS 8.0, NewEra) and a market where MSFT and ORCL were chewing them up. This analogy works for other high-tech mergers too: the most recent one being Compaq-Digital. Hmm, a proprietary company with a chip that failed in the marketplace tied together with a despirate Intel/NT company who obviously is having trouble with enterprise-size deals ... hmmm ...
