More about DSSI's meter reading product :
First, they were one of the first in the market (with field tests running for 3 years - so they had the chance to fix any glitches in beta versions if they had any).
Secondly, JT forgot to tell you the real neat thing about DSSI's product - and what makes it so much cheaper than the competition. Unlike other products, DSSI's product sends back most of the information on the power lines themselves, yes you read it correctly, on the power-line. The way the product works is as follows :
1. Each meter has the meter-reading device, which sends back data (on the power-lines) to a concentrator. There is one concentrator for every 2000-3000 meters (one in every neighborhood).
2. Like I said the concentrator gets the data from about 2000 meters. Than it sends this data to the utility's central computer. The concentrator sends the data however the customer wants - on regular phone lines, CDPD (cellular technology) or even on the internet (using the local Internet Provider - this saves a lot of money).
Due to DSSI's (I should rather say Comverge) superior technology, their product is much cheaper than the competition (50% to 70% cheaper). They built the product for third world countries, so they had to find an inexpensive technology. Now, this technology will help them take a large chunk in the huge US market.
