Jim - Re: "Could it be that IBM will actually help AMD, Cyrix and IDT as a wedge against Intel."

As we discussed - it hasn't helped Cyrix!

Will AMD's K6 yield any better at IBM than at the MegaFlop 25?

Will it even be the "same" part?

My money says that the K6 or K6-3D made on IBM's process is re-laid out to IBM's design rules - greatly increasing the size of the part.

Bear in mind that IBM's FASTEST PowerPC today is only rated at 300 MHz - and this part has been designed by IBM for IBM's most advanced process - and it appears to be WELL BELOW Intel's fastest clock speeds of 400 MHz. (We'll ignore Apple's benchmarks for the time being!)

Further, that part (PowerPC 750) is a 2.5 volt part. AMD's K6 (0.25 micron) is supposed to be a 2.2 volt part. Will AMD have to sell this as a different device and will motherboard makes have to design special motherboards for these parts?

Then, AMD has to pay IBM a profit as well as reimbursing IBM for all its fixed and variable costs for the wafers!

Then, AMD has to sell the devices against Intel's products which by Q4 will be even CHEAPER than today's prices by a long shot!

How will that help AMD?

Will it even help AMD?

This deal is no slam dunk for AMD!

Place you bets and find out!

Paul

Does anyone knows for sure if INTC doesnt have any copper technology of their own? If not, maybe INTC will license with MOT for its copper technology.

Anybody knows what the impact of INTC's Layer 3 technology on CSCO will be in the future?
