Jay,

Thanks for the WSJ GM article.

<Chrysler Corp. and Ford Motor Co. said they aren't disclosing how much they expect to spend on the same issue, arguing that the amounts aren't expected to be "material.">

I think the amounts will be a little more "material" than they realize (or want to say right now). For example: GM chief information officer, Ralph Szygenda, estimated that GM alone has over 250,000 manufacturing devices on the shop floor with potential year 2000 problems. Maybe they got a head-start on GM, but doubt THAT much.

<A Chrysler spokeswoman observed that the company has been making a point of addressing the issue since the late 1980s as it retooled its factories and upgraded its computers.>

WHOOPS! Y2K compliant RTC's (Real Time Clocks) weren't around in late 80's. They were first developed/sold around 1992. WORSE ... some companies are still selling and building with ... "NON-Y2K-Compliant RTC's.

Look what happened to those 600 brand new Pentium computers NRC & NASA got just LAST year. NONE were Y2K compliant!!

It's not just a PC problem. I gotta believe than some relatively new embedded systems have some of these RTC's that ain't gonna work right. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack.

For those naysayers who say things like, "most of the embedded systems don't use dates" ... so there shouldn't be any big problem ... check this out

FYI - 286's & 386's are prevalent on the plant floor. Confirmed this with TAVA engineers when I was at SHM.
