(Off Topic) Yeltsin fires his government

Today in a dramatic move Yeltsin fired his Prime Minister (the fellow most recently touring Silicon Valley with Al Gore) together with Chubais (head of privitization efforts) amd Nemtsov (boy wonder of efficient administration supposedly). This move could lead to something much bigger. Yeltsin may now back away from the IMF program alla Suharto (although in Russias case without IMF money the government would probably be bankrupt) and move closer to the Communist/Nationalists. Another possibility is that Yeltsin by weakening his allies of the last five years with this move, may simply face his own removal from power.

In any case it shows that the Asian crisis is now having some political fallout on the periphery of Europe where incidentally unemployment has reached 14% in France and over 10% in Germany.

Over the weekend I had a conversation with an ex-Federal Reserve official. At least some economists are getting anxious about having to pick up the pieces after any asset bubble burst in the stock market.
