Airtouch powerband gets high marks.

Better sound offered with new phone products

Jeff Silver Contributing Writer

There seems to be no end in sight to the evolution of digital technology. Its impact on the business community is most evident in communications and information management systems.

Introduced in October 1997, AirTouch Cellular's Powerband is a digital cellular network that provides better security, privacy and voice quality than analog systems. In fact, Powerband's CDMA technology (code division multiple access) was chosen by Bell Northern Research as having the best sound quality among those tested in a recent study.

Powerband offers standard features like caller ID, which would be optional in most analog networks, according to Lindsay Notwell, director of new products and services with AirTouch. He said cellular service, which used to be considered an emergency tool, is becoming a more integral part of everyday life.

"Longer battery life and lower prices are giving people more freedom to balance their lives and work more efficiently," Notwell said.

AirTouch rate plans range from $9.99 a month with 30 free weekend minutes to $50 a month with 1,000 minutes included. All plans provide "mobile to mobile" service -- the ability to talk to any other AirTouch cellular customer free of charge, considered particularly beneficial for internal communication within companies with many cellular telephones.

AirTouch Wins Western Washington's Highest Customer Satisfaction Award for Third Straight Year
Three-Point Promotion With Sonic Dale Ellis Begins Tonight
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 23, 1998--For the third year in a row, the J.D. Power Customer Satisfaction Study has rated AirTouch best in overall customer satisfaction among all wireless carriers in Western Washington.

To celebrate the repeat win, AirTouch is teaming up with Seattle SuperSonics' Dale Ellis (No. 9), the leading NBA three point shooter, to donate money to charity. For every three-point shot Ellis makes at remaining regular season home games in KeyArena, AirTouch will donate $133 dollars to Northwest Harvest.

''AirTouch is pleased to support our hometown team and give back to the community at the same time,'' said Joe Dodson, vice president and area general manager for AirTouch in Washington. ''The J. D. Power award brings nationwide recognition of AirTouch's emphasis on customer satisfaction, and we're proud to be honored with this achievement for the third consecutive year.''

According to customers questioned in the J.D. Power survey, the higher ranking for AirTouch in Western Washington is due to strong performance in call quality, coverage, pricing options, billing, customer communications, credibility and fairness and cost of roaming.

The 1997 J.D. Power and Associates Cellular Satisfaction Study is based on interviews with more than 10,000 wireless telephone users in 18 of the top U.S. markets. The Western Washington market includes: Clallam, Island, Jefferson, King, Kitsap, Mason, Pierce, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish, Thurston and Whatcom Counties.
