News Alert from PR Newswire via Quote.com Topic: (TSE:NTL) Northern Telecom Ltd., (NYSE:NT) Northern Telecom Ltd, Quote.com News Item #5858080 Headline: Nortel (Northern Telecom) to Focus on Today's Lessons, Tomorrow's Services at 1998 Second China CDMA International Summit in Beijing ====================================================================== BEIJING, March 23 /PRNewswire/ - Lessons learned from today's wireless network deployments and preparation for tomorrow's third-generation wireless services are the focus for Nortel (Northern Telecom) at the 1998 Second China CDMA International Summit, opening today and continuing through Wednesday at the China World Hotel in Beijing. Dave Murashige, vice-president, marketing, CDMA Wireless Networks, Nortel, will keynote the Tuesday morning opening general session with a presentation entitled ''CDMA Cellular Deployment Experience.'' Murashige will examine the business case for CDMA from the perspective of one of the world's leading providers of CDMA and other digital wireless network solutions. Later Tuesday morning, Man Fai Ng, vice-president, Wireless Networks, Nortel China, will expand on that theme with his talk on ''Planning a CDMA Cellular Network for Commercial Deployment in China.'' Nortel placed into service a CDMA network trial for Shaanxi Great Wall Mobile Communications in Xian in November of last year, just over four months after the contract was signed. Nortel is also heavily involved in the planning and development of third-generation wireless services. Doug McGregor, director, CDMA product line management, Wireless Networks, Nortel, will share Nortel's views on this important topic in the Tuesday afternoon panel session on ''Assessing the Evolution of CDMA Toward Third-Generation Mobile Communications Systems.'' The 1998 Second China CDMA International Summit, endorsed by China's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and sponsored locally by the China Telecom Great Wall Network, includes an exhibition of CDMA network equipment and services. Nortel, one of the international sponsors of the event, will feature in its exhibit the latest addition to the complete Nortel family of flexible, cost-effective CDMA digital wireless network solutions - the Nortel FCP800 CDMA digital base station. ''This new base station enhances Nortel's solution for cellular operators looking for maximum coverage and superior performance with a reduced footprint,'' said Man Fai Ng. Designed to address the issues of limited and expensive real estate operators often face in wireless network deployment, the Nortel FCP800 base station combines power and channel elements and RF components in a single cabinet for scalability and a small footprint. The Nortel FCP800 base station can easily migrate from an omni-directional configuration to a three-sector design. It features low receive sensitivity for improved coverage, and an integrated duplexer for easy overlay of existing networks. Nortel's exhibit will also feature the Nortel RF Optimizer and Nortel's Virtual Home Location Register (VHLR). The Nortel RF Optimizer is an easy-to-use software package which provides status reports on network performance and detailed problem analysis. Nortel's VHLR allows one physical Home Location Register to be divided into multiple partitions for use by multiple networks. ''From top to bottom, Nortel's innovative CDMA platform provides a flexible, cost-effective approach for wireless operators looking to move up to the superior voice quality and advanced features of CDMA digital service,'' Man Fai Ng said.
