LG Telecom's Korea subscribers now have access to a variety of wireless data services ranging from Internet access to e-mail and fax capabilities using standard cdmaOne handsets and a computer. "The CDG applauds the launch of wireless data services by LG Telecom," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "Wireless data access service represents an important next step in the evolution of existing cdmaOne networks to the next generation of wireless technology. "In the coming months, and as seen today with LG Telecom, cdmaOne operators are on a clear path to offer a multitude of value-added services to subscribers throughout the world. LG Telecom's launch of wireless data service provides a distinct indication of how existing cdmaOne networks will provide new features and capabilities as part of the ongoing evolution of the technology toward third-generation capabilities. "The addition of 64Kbs data capabilities to existing cdmaOne networks will be the next step in this ongoing evolution and we expect this capability to be commercially available by the end of 1998." "We are very pleased to be the first operator to offer wireless data services using cdmaOne technology," said Youn-Kwan Kim, executive director, LG Telecom Ltd. "We believe that the addition of wireless data to our networks demonstrates the superiority of cdmaOne as an evolution path to IMT-2000, and will continue to devote LG's efforts to constantly improving the quality of service and the technology for our subscribers throughout Korea." The implementation of this service is based on the IS-658 and IS-707 standards. The service can support data rates of up to 14.4 kbps in circuit-switched mode, including wireless fax capabilities. By leveraging the inherent soft hand-off properties of cdmaOne, the LG Telecom system provides uninterrupted data service for mobile users. LG Telecom, founded in 1996, is a new cdmaOne-based PCS carrier in Korea. LG Telecom launched commercial service in October 1997 and currently has more than 500,000 customers.
