>>not allowing two people to have the same alias on SI would be:
1. A convenience for those of us that don't have the time to keep checking profiles

Agreed. I question that we give up more than we get for the
convenience. Is there no other way to do this?

>> 2. A safeguard against unscrupulous impersonation; believe me, it's happened

I believe you. Again it's a question of giving up more than
one gets and if there is an alternative middle ground.

>> 3. No more a violation of expression than not allowing the same vanity license plate in a given state.

Did I argue it was about freedom of expression? My opinion has
to do with responsibility.

>> If SI
suddenly wants everyone to have numbers and no names then that's
their prerogative; it's their site.

Quite true. And I'd have an opinion about that, would express
it freely (dispite my SI-imposed number), other numbers
would express their opinions, no doubt varying as we have here,
and Brad and Jeff (I mean 1 and 2) would make their decision,
and we could (a) like it, or (b) lump it.

I do think it has merit to make individuals distinct in some
way. My opinion is that it isn't necessary to restrict
handles to do that. Moreover, in the long run I don't think
it's effective (witness the earlier Captain Kirk business--
THOSE handles are distinct).

>>ask some SI people with stellar reputations who are being
impersonated and trashed on Yahoo how they feel.

I expect they feel terrible; they should have recourse; it
should be enforced vigorously.

How would restricting handles on SI effect that end?
You make my point.
