CeBIT 98: AMD admits the K6-3D will be late

Thu, 19 Mar 1998 18:49:50 GMT - Munir Kotadia

AMD today confirmed the K6-3D processor will be late. The chip, which will be manufactured with the help of IBM, will now appear around April/June.

The chip maker demonstrated the delayed product in a behind-the-scenes meeting at its CeBIT stand, showing a 300Mhz K6-3D system with a 100Mhz bus Microstar motherboard running a beta of Dreamworks' Trespasser game.

Rana Mainee, AMD's European market development manager, confirmed that the part will be aimed primarily at the gaming audience but expects strong sales to SoHo users also.

In a way, this article is very confusing - IF IBM is involved, the K6-3D won't be available by June!

TigerDirect Announces A New High Performance Budget PC
PR Newswire - March 23, 1998 06:58
MIAMI, March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- TigerDirect, a leading manufacturer of PCs, announced today a new system to enter the market for small office and home office customers. The Tiger GT-266, at $1,299 including monitor, is the newest machine in Tiger's Value line of PCs.
According to Gilbert Fiorentino, chief executive officer of TigerDirect,"With a very high-quality 15" monitor as part of the package, this system is better than many sub-$1,000 offers which don't include a monitor and don't offer anywhere near the features, performance or expandability of the Tiger GT-266."
The performance of the GT-266 rivals that of machines costing hundreds of dollars more. It is based on the new AMD-KG/266 MHz processor with MMX(TM) technology and features 1 Megabyte of Level II cache on the motherboard and an AGP graphics card. "The small office and home office customers we're reaching are demanding more power and better features in lower cost systems. We're very pleased to offer all of the features found in machines costing thousands of dollars for only $1,299," said Mr. Fiorentino.
The GT-266 includes an AMD K6-266 MHz processor with MMX(TM) technology, 64 MB SDRAM, 4.3 GB Ultra DMA Hard Drive, 128-bit AGP Video with 4MB RAM, Tiger by KDS 15" Monitor (13.9 viewable), 32X Max CD-ROM Drive, Yamaha 3D Wavetable Sound Card, JBL Media 100 Stereo Speakers, 56K HyperModem with Speakerphone, and Windows(R)95 software. Three PCI slots and one shared ISA/PCI slot are available for future expansion.
