James,

<<Chris(and Bob) before this gets out of hand I would like to state my doctrinal
position about Heirs according to the promise.
In Paul's writings there are phrases like "Abraham's Seed" and "Heirs according
to the promise."
Christ is Abraham's seed. We are members of Christ. We do fall heir to all things
in Him. Israel, to whom the promise pertained, (Romans 9:4), did not become heir,
while we the members of the secret, unprophesied, body have become heirs in
Christ. This, however does not nullify the promises made to the nation which is
Abraham's natural seed.
We are "sealed" with the Holy Spiritof promise and made partakers of His
<ipromise in Christ, by the Gospel of Jesus Christ.>>

The promise was not to both the body of Christ and the nation of Israel. There is a lack of seeing the work God has done in the spirit and an over emphasis on the things of the flesh. The children of the promise are heirs because of faith just as Abraham was justified because of his faith before the Law and before Israel was a nation. I am not taking away from the special place Israel has in history. Only stating how the promise falls to the children of faith.

Romans 4:13-15
13 For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith.
14 For if those who are of the Law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is nullified;
15 for the Law brings about wrath, but where there is no law neither is there violation.
16 For this reason it is by faith, that it might be in accordance with grace, in order that the promise may be certain to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,

"For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith."

First the Law did not bring faith, but wrath. The promise to Abraham was through the principle of faith in God. The same as the body of Christ today. This was a promise that connected Abraham to the New Covenant before the Old Covenant of the Law was established. Moses brought the Old Covenant from God but Abraham brought the New Covenant first. The New Covenant of Jesus Christ was first; based on the principle of faith and grace, not the Law. The heirs of the promise are through Faith in Jesus Christ, we are the heirs of the promise. The confusion is because some are looking at the descendants from Abraham in the flesh when the true heirs are through the Spirit.

"For if those who are of the Law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is nullified;
for the Law brings about wrath, but where there is no law neither is there violation."

Abraham was before the Law. The righteousness by faith in Jesus Christ came first. Abraham believed God and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. He believed Jesus before Jesus established the New Covenant in His blood. This promise to Abraham was for the Covenant that would bring salvation in Jesus, not the Law. The Law came after this first promise and it was not the fulfillment of the promise. Jesus was. The heirs of the Law are not the heirs of the promise. Those who are heirs are heirs through the righteousness of faith. They are not under or subject to the Law and so there is no violation. That is grace, the covenant of grace.

"For this reason it is by faith, that it might be in accordance with grace, in order that the promise may be certain to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,"

There is a lot of truth here and a very important distinction between those of the Law and those of the faith of Abraham. It is not those of the Law who have the promise (Israel) but those of the faith of Abraham. It says Abraham is the father of us all speaking to the Romans. Now he could not be the father of us all in the flesh. Paul means he is the father of us all in the spirit by faith. We are the heirs of the promise, the body of Christ, the born again believers.

We read in Hebrews chapter 11 that all the Old Testament figures who are with God are with Him because of faith. They are heirs of the promise through faith, not the Law. Moses is not there because he was Jewish, but because he had faith. Noah was not Jewish but became an heir to the promise and he lived before Abraham! Enoch walked with God through faith, an heir to the promise and he also lived before Abraham.

Hebrews 11:6
And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
