Bill,

If you've used a Mac recently, you will have noticed it is clearly faster and much more responsive than an x86 box. This is, IMHO, a fact. Simply, PowerPC is RISC, which makes it smaller (therefore cheaper), faster, and less power hungry than any x86 option that exists. When Apple unveils Rhapsody (its Mach/Unix-based MacOS version), the Mac will get even faster.

In general Mac prices are coming down, as they start to standardize the boxes on parts and utilize more parts available on PCs. For example, not EVERY Mac comes equipped with a SCSI drive nowadays.

But unfortunately its too late for Apple. The situaion will get better for the company and for the company's customers, though, and I think MacOS will survive as a niche.
