This is what I know: (MSFT & NSCP used to be partnered/invested with VRSN before they went public.) VRSN's Office 98/HP news does not effect DVNTF at all. I know this because I know Larry Gamble (great guy, chief of operations at VRSN). He offered me a very nice position with them about 1 year ago. During our month long relationship I learned ALOT. I'm familiar with the company and their vision. VRSN offers a good product but it's not what industry leaders are looking for. Industry leaders have a different vision than that of VRSN. MSFT is not "going" with VRSN. VRSN is bending it's back to "go" with MSFT. Basically VRSN said, "hey everyone, we developed a way so Office 98 can use our product." Note, MSFT could care less that VRSN supports Office 98. If MSFT thought this was great news don't you think they would promote it? VRSN's "solution" for MSFT is very complicated, cumbersome and inefficient for customers AND MSFT. Yes, HP does use VRSN's technology for some projects, what else is there? Keep in mind, digital certificate/ID technology is in it's infancy. The areas/situations/applications/products in or on which they can be used are very limited. Think about it... Does MSFT/NSCP/ORCL/CSCO/HP/etc... want to tell their customers, "Ok everyone, if you want our products/services to be secure you need to go to VRSN or some other certificate authority." No. This would more than likely frustrate and irritate customers. Especially when VRSN is unable to produce mass volumes of them, which would be needed. Companies with a large customer base want and need to provide a complete ecommerce solution, this includes the security aspect. At the moment, companies like VRSN have problems with certificate production. Meaning, it's very difficult for them to produce large amounts of certificates. VRSN is also unable to produce "dynamic" certificates. Much development, research and testing is being conducted at the moment to produce "dynamic" certificate issuing technology. The computer industry is reengineering security/certificate technology. It's all very black and white... if industry leaders were satisfied with current ecommerce security solutions, don't you think they would promote/hail VRSN or Entrust more? Or promote them as options to their customers? It's painfully clear that VRSN is not "really" providing what their looking for. MSFT & NSCP are no longer partners/investors with VRSN. Rather, industry leaders are working on technology they can actually use/implement in their vision/future technology. They seem to be using DVNTF to do this. With the help of industry leaders DVNTF is re-engineering security technology to align with the needs/vision of industry leaders. That's why this is all very interesting, new concepts are being expounded upon. DVNTF's potential is relevant to the invested interest leaders have in them. As long as leaders are interested in DVNTF, I'm interested in DVNTF. Just because your the first one out of the gate doesn't mean your going to win the race. VRSN's chart will look nothing like Amazon's.
