Cisco 12000 Gigabit Switch Router Chosen by Netscape to Scale Campus Backbone Netscape Prepares for Migration to High-Speed Links with Scalable, High-Performance Cisco Routers and Technology SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 24, 1998-- Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced that Netscape Communications Corporation [Nasdaq:NSCP - news] has chosen the Cisco 12000 series Gigabit Switch Router (GSR) as an aggregation device for connectivity to its campus backbone. Netscape selected the Cisco 12000 GSR to take advantage of existing OC-3 (155 Mbps) links and enable it to migrate to higher-speed links in the future. This high-speed backbone will enable Netscape to provide the millions of visitors to its Web site with faster Web page access, file transfer protocol (FTP) access, future applications and superior reliability. ''The Cisco 12000 GSR meets the exponential growth in demand for bandwidth and high-performance services that Netscape experiences on a daily basis,'' said Doug Dalton, manager of network engineering and new technologies at Netscape. ''By deploying the Cisco 12000 GSR throughout our core backbone now, we are preparing for higher speed connectivity and new technologies in the future.'' Netscape is using the Cisco 12000 GSR with existing Cisco 7500 series routers as an aggregation device for connectivity to the campus backbone. The Cisco 12000 GSR gives Netscape the ability to scale to OC-12 (622 Mbps) and beyond in both connectivity to the Internet and bringing that connectivity to the campus. ''With the Cisco 12000 and Cisco 7500 series deployed in its backbone network, Netscape has built one of the most sophisticated and scalable enterprise networks today,'' said Graeme Fraser, vice president and general manager of Cisco's Internet Service Provider (ISP) Business Unit. The Cisco 12000 is a new product in a class of gigabit switch routers to deliver Internet routing and switching at gigabit speeds. Cisco 12000 series GSRs provide scalable IP forwarding and services performance in a carrier-class platform, enabling high-speed IP backbones to scale to scale from OC-3 to OC-12 and OC-48 (2.4 Gbps). Future GSR technology will support OC-192 (9.6 Gbps). With extensive redundancy and carrier-compliant equipment standards, the Cisco 12000 series is expressly designed to provide the high availability required by high-speed campus backbones.
