Additional info to Sony Repurchase story. They plan to produce 20,000 units per month. I don't know if all units will go into DVD-ROM kit, but looking at the price mentioned in the article below looks like these are the numbers for the entire DVD-ROM kit (including hardware decoder). Any thoughts? Link: digitaltheater.com sony announces fastest dvd-rom drive to date [ Back to the News | Back HOME ] TOKYO, JAPAN, Newsbytes via NewsEdge Corporation : Sony Corporation [TOKYO:6758] has announced a new DVD-ROM drive that offers up to five times standard speed playback making it the fastest such drive yet, claimed the company. The device also offers 32 times standard speed playback of CD-ROM discs. The drive uses CAV (constant angular velocity), which involves keeping the disc rotation speed constant. Conventional drives use CLV (constant linear velocity), which varies the speed of the disc to data is always read at the same speed. Because the length of each track varies across the disc, with the longest tracks being on the outside, running the disc at constant speed means data rates will vary. The five times speed is achieved on the outside edge of the disc, with data speed reducing to two times speed on the inner most tracks. The use of CAV results in a uniform access time of 100 milliseconds across the entire disc. An access time of 80 milliseconds is offered with compact discs. Maximum data transfer rate for DVD is 6.75 megabytes per second and for CD is 4.8 megabytes per second. The new drive is upgradable to support Sony's proposed DVD+RW system, which is expected to compete with DVD-RAM in the rewritable optical disc market. Sony said the DDU220E will ship in sample quantities from May, with a price tag of 50,000 yen ($385). It will be offered to OEM customers and Sony plans monthly production of 20,000 units, a company spokesman told Newsbytes.
