NEC Selects Complete C-Cube MPEG-2 Set-Top Chipset Solution for World's First Commercial Interactive Multimedia Services Project
NEC's C-Cube Based Set-top Will be Used by Hong Kong Telecom to Add Advanced Services Such as Video on Demand, Home Shopping and Games
MILPITAS, Calif. -- January 27, 1997-- C-Cube Microsystems Inc. (NASDAQ: CUBE), a market leader in digital video, today announced that NEC Corporation has selected C-Cube's CL9100 MPEG-2 digital video set-top decoder and CL9110 transport demultiplexer as the complete digital video solution for NEC's new digital set-top box. NEC's receiver will be used by Hong Kong Telecom IMS Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Hong Kong Telecom, in China's first multimedia network that offers a wide variety of new interactive services, Internet access and entertainment. This next-generation digital telecommunications network will deploy these advanced services to Chinese consumers beginning in the fall of 1997.

The NEC set-top box will interface directly with Hong Kong Telecom IMS's network, delivering an MPEG-2 quality video and audio experience as well as advanced digital television services unavailable with existing DBS programs. This set-top box is one of the first to support true 2-way interactivity enabling such services as video-on-demand, home shopping, home banking and interactive games. NEC's set-top will also features PC connectivity to support broadband high-speed Internet access services.

"We are delighted that NEC has selected our solution for such a groundbreaking service launch," said Alex Daly, vice president of marketing for C-Cube Microsystems. "This deployment promises to bring unprecedented amounts of digital video entertainment and services to consumers in China. The pace of digital video adoption continues to accelerate worldwide as evidenced by this momentous announcement."

Hong Kong Telecom IMS's new service will be based on Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technology, delivering high speed multimedia data to residences via a Fiber To The Building (FTTB) and Very high speed Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL) network. Test services will begin in the summer of 1997.

C-Cube's CL9100 and CL9110 MPEG-2 Set-Top Solution
The CL9100 is a single chip, RISC-based solution specifically designed to decode MPEG-2 Main-Level/Main-Profile; MPEG-2 Main level/Simple-Profile; and MPEG-1. This digital video set-top decoder is fully compliant with MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and DVB standards, eliminating the interoperability issues faced by many hardware developers. The CL9100 provides on-screen display capabilities, efficient memory usage, advanced error concealment functionality and a high-level command-based host interface. The programmability of the solution allows broadcasters to add end-user oriented features to broadcast services using the CL9100. The CL9100 also supports both NTSC and PAL.

The CL9110 divides the MPEG-2 transport layer into Packetized Elementary Streams (PES), routes the streams to a descrambler, and demultiplexes the video, audio and data components of the PES for processing by video, audio and set-top microcontroller circuits. The CL9110 is designed for seamless integration with the CL9100 and audio decoders from several third parties.
