I think the bottom line is that if one is going play the game, then one must learn how to play it properly in order to make the risk worth the reward. In Canada, it is illegal for brokers to prospect for clients by calling them at home. I believe this is not the case for U.S. brokers. Even legitimate stock brokers and their firms develop conflicts of interest by selling stocks to clients that they own big cheap positions in, or the brokerage firm plans to/or has just done an offering for the listed company. The best hype I have ever seen were all under the category of "research reports".
