DMG field trip to Charles Schwab

George Gilbert (DMG analyst) posted a research note this morning describing a trip they hosted for some of their clients to visit Schwab and see their Vantive deployment. Scwab was looking for the ability to connect specific customers to specific employees and to anticipate their (i.e., the customers) needs. Vendor choice was based on features, tools, support capability and price (in that order). Next step is supposed to be a beauty contest between Vantive and SEBL to choose a vendor to unify all of the customer applications (enterprise-wide).

Kevin, you are probably right about MSFT viewing VNTV being 'in-between' CLFY and SEBL.

Schwab will be choosing between VNTV and SEBL to consolidate support and SFA. I wonder if MSFT ends up doing the same which would imply SCOP replaces CLFY (VERY speculative).

You were right all along Kevin about support being tougher than SFA. Siebel admits it now. Sounds like a defensive acquisition to me. Vantive sells single module seats for $2,500 and multi-module seats for $3,500. Siebel has similar seat pricing but you didn't get any decent support software if you bought a multi-module SEBL seat (and you still won't until you get those SCOP engineers to work on integrating the two).

My opinion is that it will be nearly impossible for SEBL to win a deal in direct competition with VNTV if the sale includes anything more than pure-SFA. The good news for SEBL is that there continues to be enough companies out there who are willing to spend big bucks for what is basicaly a contact management system with some aesthetic fluff.

BTW, I wonder if we will get to see Tom's mug during a timeout for any of the Final Four games. That would likely signal another blowout quarter.

Don't you think Clarify should have had a better inside line on the SFA opportunity at MS? I mean Clarify is focused on that market?, they've made a couple of acquisitions 2 years ago to acquire domain experience and accelerate a product introduction, and a product is expected shortly? Coupled with Clarify's large (and successful?) installation in support, it should have been a classic enterprise sell. What happened?
