High growth rate in the Japanese market for embedded DSP chips.....
newsalert.com

<<Industry analysts agree that Japan's consumer electronics industry is a
principal driver of demand for embedded microprocessors, microcontrollers
and digital signal processors (DSPs).
"No country is as important as Japan in the global consumer electronics
industry," said Tom Starnes, director and principal analyst of embedded
microcomponents at Dataquest (San Jose, California). "Consumer products have
become more electronic and digital, with products such as wireless phones,
video games, cameras, and DVD giving rise to a 23 percent annual growth rate
in the sales of embedded microcomponents."
Will Strauss, industry analyst at Forward Concepts Co. (Phoenix, Arizona),
points out that embedded DSP products are an important part of the overall
market opportunity in Japan.
"Japan consumed more than $500 million dollars worth of programmable DSP
chips, and more than $1 billion in function-specific DSP chips, such as MPEG
and AC-3 decoders, in 1997," said Strauss. "Fueled by digital consumer
electronics, digital wireless, and higher-speed modems, the 1998 Japanese DSP
chip market is projected to grow by 30 percent, and reach $2.2 billion in
annual revenue by the year 2002."
