I think this quarter will beat the street, but I think Eric's range is too high, and people here are going even higher than that now.

At last! a fellow current-quarter earnings bear....

AAPL moved up in the rankings not because their sales ran ahead of expectations, but because their sales didn't drop as badly as everyone elses. Compaq and Micron got hammered in January. I think Dell did OK, and Gateway hasn't reported yet.

I don't follow Compaq that closely, but my understanding was that the big reason their sales tanked was because they stuffed the channel in the previous quarter. The fact that Dell was on target backs that up. Microsoft's +17% announcement is further corroboration. Also, that same report said that Compaq led in market share, with no slippage, in January. Since the report tracks retail sales, rather than shipments from Compaq, it would seem that PC sales were normal in January, but that the Compaq boxes being sold were leftovers from the previous quarter.

Maybe Alomex or someone who follows CPQ and DELL can provide insight.

Even still, 7% of a smaller market is an enormous jump over the previous quarter. I really do believe that there was huge pent-up demand for Macs from companies that were afraid Apple was in a death spiral, and that demand was unleashed after the profit announcement in January. That's the main reason why I'm a bull among bulls for this Q's numbers.
