Axent Grabs Market Share Lead in Risk Assessment and Intrusion Detection Market

Independent Market Research Study by Hurwitz Group Shows AXENT is Dominant Security Provider with 43% Market Share

ROCKVILLE, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 26, 1998-- AXENT Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:AXNT - news), The SOURCE for Enterprise Security(tm), today announced that a newly released market research study published by Hurwitz Group, confirms AXENT's clear leadership position in the security risk assessment and intrusion detection market.

The study, entitled ''Information Security: Assessing Risks and Detecting Intrusions,'' analyzes the key vendors in the risk assessment and intrusion detection market, and discusses the importance of organizations properly securing their computer business systems with a comprehensive approach.

According to Steven Foote, vice president of Hurwitz Group, ''The combined market for risk assessment and intrusion detection products is growing faster than 50% per year. In 1997, $65 million was spent on products in this market and there is no sign of the growth slowing down through the year 2000.''

''AXENT Technologies weighed in as the undisputed market leader with 1997 revenues of approximately $28 million for combined sales of its risk assessment product, OmniGuard/Enterprise Security Manager, and its intrusion detection product, Intruder Alert,'' continued Foote. ''With twice the revenue of its closest competitor, AXENT is the dominant player with 43% market share.''

Other vendors listed in the Hurwitz Group study include Internet Security Systems (ISS) with $13 million at 20% market share, Intrusion Detection, Inc. with $6 million at 9%, Trusted Information Systems (TIS) with $4 million at 6%, The Wheel Group with $3 million at 5%, Veritas with $2 million at 3%, and Network Associates with $1 million at 2% of the market.

''AXENT is proud to have achieved such a commanding lead in this fast-growing market,'' said John Becker, president and CEO of AXENT Technologies. ''This is consistent with our overall goal to not only provide the broadest line of security products to our customers, but also to take the leading position within each security market segment as a technology innovator with superior products.''
