Paul, Paul, Paul...>Ian - Re: "And just so we're on the same page kiddo >- Intel's announced Deschutes rollout is a 350MHz, >400MHz and, then finally, a 450MHz version perhaps >by the end of the year." >And just to get you on the SAME PAGE, IBM/APPLE's >rollout was a 300 MHz PowerPC - 3-0-0 ! Yes Paul. But I don't see what you're referring to. I didn't even mention the 300MHz PowerPC in my post. What I said was: The 480MHz G4 is not expected to be released until the end of the year - about the same time as the 450MHz Deschutes (or about 2 years ahead of Merced). I was comparing Apple's slower 266MHz PowerPC to the current top-of-the-line 333MHz Deschutes. Hey, I'm nothing if not fair. >As for " also demoed a prototype 1,100MHz PowerPC >architecture. "That was an INTEGER ONLY processor - >not a full PowwrPC chip. Yes Paul. It was a technology demo. That's what "pro-to-type PowerPC ar-chi-tec-ture" means. Why don't you use other >benchmarks? Like what Paul? (BTW, I've referred to BYTEmark once ) You're suggesting I use maybe Winbench 97? BYTEmark is a highly respected cross-processor, industry-accepted evaluation protocol which has been used for years. Even Intel uses it (in-house). BYTEmark's benchmark suite is simply a collection of small programs made up of manageable algorithms. The executable code portion of each test occupies less than 16KB of machine code. The test programs are written in ANSI C - they are portable to a wide range of systems running UNIX, DOS, Windows NT, and MacOS - and the programs are single threaded - imposing no restrictions on compiler optimization. If there was something funny going on Paul, obviously Intel would have been squawking from here to Mountain View. They're silent. Ian Bruce New York, NY
