LONDON - The idea of a massive sale of new gold coins to mark the millennium has
intrigued bullion analysts, but the notion that they will use up 1 000 tons of gold is being
widely scorned. It was reported at the weekend that the world's largest gold mining
companies were planning the launch of a global millennium coin that could absorb so much
gold that the supply-demand balance would be dramatically altered.
