Richnorth:

There are so many variables that led to the Allies victory I cannot begin to list them all, including the heroic sacrifices of the underground in Europe -- many of whom were betrayed when we handed them over to the Soviets at the end of the war.

Among the variables was the fact that England had broken the German High Command code and kept it a secret from the Germans throughout the war. BTW, it was broken by a young genius who happened to be gay.

<< However, I did read an newspaper account that General Eisenhower did admit Normandy was a very bad choice. >>

Interesting. First time I've heard that.

<< But the news presented was such as to suggest as if Normandy was deliberately chosen (not as a ruse/decoy) but as the actual landing spot because it was realized the Germans would not have bothered to prepare for that eventuality. >>

It is my understanding that one of the reasons Normandy was chosen was because the Germans would not expect a landing there; they were focussed on the Pas de Calais. The allies knew this because they had cracked the German military radio codes.

<< Perhaps it was still possible to nip the invasion in the bud had the Panzers rolled into action on Day 1. Just my humble opinion. >>

Could be. The advantage is with the defenders in the early stages of an amphibious landing. That's why the allies went to such lengths to keep the Germans focussed on Calais.
