Sun , Ericcson in Java pact-NYT

NEW YORK, March 24 (Reuters) - Sun Microsystems Inc (SUNW - news). is expected
Tuesday to announce that Telefon AB L.M. Ericcson will license Java for use in its cellular
telephones, the New York Times reported.

Sun is also close to a licensing deal with Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news; 6758.T). (6758.T), an
industry executive with knowledge of talks between the two companies told the Times.

Java, a computer programming language developed by Sun, is suddenly enjoying new momentum
outside the personal computer industry, and Sun is planning to announce several new deals with
consumer electronics manufacturers over the next few weeks, the Times said, citing people familiar
with the matter.

This is the first year that the Java language will be widely available for consumer devices other than
computers. Sun now has 150 Java licensees, including deals with the major cellular phone
companies, Motorola Inc (MOT - news). (MOT - news), Nokia (NOKSa.HE) and Ericsson.

Sun, based in Mountain View, Calif., will announce the Ericcson agreement and sketch out its
consumer electronics strategy at its Java One industry conference, scheduled to begin in San
Francisco on Tuesday, the paper said.

Sun is also close to announcing an agreement with IBM Corp. (IBM - news) in which the two
companies will agree to cooperate on developing a Java operating system for a variety of
consumer and embedded applications, the Times said.

That agreement will be announced after the Java One conference, executives at both Sun and IBM
told the Times.

Hmm, I wonder who's chip Ericcson will use for their new java phones.
