Microsoft says Q3 net to beat estimates

Reuters, Tuesday, March 24, 1998 at 18:21

SEATTLE, March 24 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp.
(NASDAQ:MSFT) earnings for its current fiscal third quarter will beat
analyst expectations by about 9 percent due to strong sales and
declining expenses, chief financial officer Greg Maffei said
Tuesday.
Maffei said in a conference call with reporters and
analysts he expects earnings of about $0.48 a share, compared
with the consensus estimate of $0.44 and the $0.40 posted a
year ago.
Maffei said revenues for the current quarter ending June 30
would be 17 to 18 percent higher than the $3.2 billion posted
in the comparable year-earlier period.
Maffei also expected earnings for the fourth quarter ending
June 30 to be slightly lower than the third-quarter, although
still "several pennies" above the consensus estimate of $0.43
per share.
He cautioned that the current quarter could represent the
best quarter of calendar 1998 in terms of earnings as growth
continues to slow.
Maffei said that, while Microsoft's Asia business has not
worsened recently, there is little evidence of improvement and
the company remains cautious about prospects for the region. He
also cautioned about the potential for slowing sales of Office
and of personal computers in general.

Here we go again!!

MSFT will be sreaming tommorow and the NAZ futures are already up 9 pts on GLOBEX.....DOW 9,000 is tomm probably....BUT is this good for AMAT?

My take is it will bounce short-term, but MSFT is benefiting from the "pushout" of PC's and lower overall prices....They do not care what price a PC is sold for, as long as it is loaded with Windows software, which we all know it is....I do not see how fundamentally this helps semi's or semi equip makers..!? FSII reports bad earnings and a "scary" forward looking statement...Sure they are only FSII, not a big player, but read their outlook..They state calendar year '98 might not even equal '97!?

Anyway, Everyone on this thread will get even more testy because all the indexes will scream higher and AMAT will probably continue to lag (for now)

Still Waiting!!
