Good afternoon Margaret
amd is planning to release k7 that should start at 500MHz next year. So there is no real surprise in 702MHz pII. k6-3d+ outperform pII at the same speed on 100MHz board by about 30% so there is no reason to think that k7 is going to be slower than that. Plus current 702MHz chip is as far from reality as 450MHz chip that was demoed by intel 2 years ago. Just as in the 1st demo it used special cooling system.
Now, no doubt that there are some development at intel but all I hear about is merced and the rest is going to be a variation on pii. If 1B is the target (and I doubt that it is) then it is more compelling reasons to buy companies with a small market share like amd, cyrx, idti. The effect of expending market would be stronger on them than intel.
Super s7 is probably on its way out. It is highly questionable that cyrx is going to go with slot 1/2 in spite of nsm rights. It is not in the best interests of cyrx and cyrx was working on their own connection for a while already. Super s7 is still going to be better for sub-1000 than Covington or whatever its name.
AMD anounced that k6 would compete against new sub-1000 covington which took intel by surprise. K6 is definetly faster and better but intel hoped that it would continue selling at 25% below pentiums even on 100MHz boards. Intel showed that that was a completely unexpected move by amd and refused to comment on it. k6-3d and k6-3d+ are expected to take on the best that pII can offer now or in the near future. k7 is going to be out next year and possibly on ibm's copper .18 um process.
Some analysts pointed out that amd negotiating a number of foundry arrangements in order to take over substantial portion of the market.

Now, I do not give any kind of investment advice but are you sure in your recomendation of intel vs amd :-))
Regards
-Albert
