In a surprise conference call with financial analysts, Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) on Tuesday said that its third-quarter sales and earnings would be better than originally expected.

Microsoft shares closed up $1.06 per share to $84.94 prior to the announcement. In after-hours trading, the stock surged up another $3 per share to $88.
