Lithium ion and Lithium polymer share pretty much the same electrical characteristics. Where polymer can shine is in new advantageous form factors such as the battery spreading out over the whole exterior surface of a laptop, either underneath or behind the LCD display. This would free up room inside for electronic and mechanical devices.

This is such a natural form for a plastic prismatic battery that I am wondering if there is a problem in doing this, because I haven't heard any manufacturer tout an ability to do this. Perhaps de-lamination is a concern. It seems that whoever can offer polymer batteries in novel forms that aid the designs of the battery powered devices will emerge as the most successful manufacturer. And who that may be is unknown to me.
