150K and Counting: TCI Offers Digital Projection, '97 Revenues

Denver-TCI counts 150K Digital Cable customers and more than 30K waiting in the installation queue of the 11mln customers (pre-joint ventures) the service is available to, TCI COO Marvin Jones told lenders at the op's annual conference yesterday. The op expects to count 800K to 1mln Digital Cable customers by the end of the year, he added. As an example of penetration levels the op can achieve, Jones pointed to the Richmond, IN, market, which enjoys an 8% Digital Cable penetration rate after four months of availability. TCI reported 1997 earnings, posting revenue of $7.57bln, compared $8.022 bln for 1996. The decrease is due to the de-consolidation of Liberty Media's [LBTYA] electronic retailing services and the spin-off of TSAT [TSATA]. Free cash flow for 1997 was $913mln, compared to negative $977mln in 1996. That change is a result of the disposition of HSN as well as the TSAT spin-off, TCI says. In addition, the company reduced its leverage ratio to 4.82 times from 6.32 times in 1996. The op ended the year with 14.4mln customers; that number will decrease to 10.5mln when it closes the nine remaining of 12 joint ventures and system swaps it announced last year. As previously reported, the op increased customers in Q4 '97 by 155K and is shooting for 1998 analog customer growth of 2% to 2.5%. Revenue for Q4 '97 was $1.922bln, compared to $2.155bln for Q4 '96.
