getgo: Darned if I know. You suggest the right thing - without leadership it will be tough. I'm just hoping people realize that INTC's problems are really INTC's problems! PC market changing + I think I mentioned this before but if you want to sell faster processors then you better have a reason for people to buy faster processors - since the software today appears to NOT require faster hardware, today's processors can do the job just fine. Therefore why pay for a $500 processor when an $80 processor will do. Maybe a spike with Win98 if Win98 needs POWER and definitely a spike when we get round to software of mass appeal with voice recognition (which would be cool). As briefing.com correctly pointed out, for now, it's the bandwidth issue that rules not the MPU. I think the money may come once earnings come out and people realize that the specialty semis are doing all right. Again I'm concerned about the collapse in 3Com's margins but they appear to be explaining it away to an inventory thing. So let it be - CPQ inventory problems, everyone shifting to the new inventory model. That would be a great reason to explain all of the disappearing earnings in the various tech stocks wouldn't it? Best of all it would be temporary !! I'm not sure either way. The one bugaboo is a stock market collapse. Which I think is coming. Unless all those guys do a nice orderly sector swtich into the tech stocks - which would make me quite happy - but which I don't know will happen BEFORE the whole thing crashes. --- Any way - DVD news of interest - soft DVD, the antithesis of LSI's solution - again from IP98: Zoran's core solution for DVD decoding picks up followers by Michael Santarini of EE Times - 24/2/98 Zoran Corp. (Santa Clara, Calif.) has announced an alliance with 16 graphics accelerator companies, including IX Micro, Nvidia, and Silicon Motion, to deliver high- performance DVD software decoding for the PC market using the company's SoftDVD, software-only DVD decoder. Ten of these companies are using SoftDVD in conjunction with Zoran's 5k-gate motion compensation core. According to Zoran, these companies, which have licensed the technology-independent, motion compensation VLSI core in soft format from Zoran, are in the process of integrating it into their future graphics accelerator products. In addition, Zoran has signed four joint development agreements to adapt SoftDVD to graphics accelerators containing third-party motion compensation. According to Zoran, the combination of Zoran's SoftDVD and graphics accelerators with motion compensation will provide a high-performance, low-cost software DVD playback solution for multimedia PCs eliminating the need for dedicated hardware.
