From Briefing.com
"Computer Networking
Brief: Like the disk drive industry, networking stocks shrugged off bad news from Cabletron to post strong gains... Even CS got into the action, gaining 3/16 despite lousy earnings... Biggest winners were Cisco (+3 1/16), Ascend (+1 7/8), Bay Networks (+1 1/2) and 3Com (+2 1/8)... As noted in General Commentary above, latter company
announced much weaker than expected earnings... But analyst focusing less on headline number and more on future... Given company's positive comments regarding getting inventories under control, stock likely to rally despite downright awful report... COMS is
up 1/8 in after hours trading... Cisco and others rode comments from CSCO CEO that new markets offer significant revenue growth opportunities... Chambers noted that CSCO
could get as much as 50% of revenues from telephone companies and Internet service providers by year 2002... Maybe, but new markets also come with new competitors such as Lucent, Nortel, etc... Companies which will provide much stiffer competition to
CSCO than the likes of FORE and Cabletron... But that's not happy talk so forget about it, it doesn't matter."
