"Over the last year, we've made really tremendous strides in getting the
performance of the [Java virtual machine] up to industrial strength," he
said. "This year is the year that the performance problem goes away."

"The set of developer tools out there has really exploded," said Gosling
who added that 2.5 million developer kits had so far been downloaded
from Sun's home page on the Internet.

Later, Alan Baratz, the president of Sun's JavaSoft division, said the
company plans to highlight "breadth over depth."

"We've now reached the point where we're close to reaching a critical
mass of functionality to build rich applications," said Baratz, adding that
the company plans to dedicate "significant" resources to improve Java's
functionality. "Going forward, we will be focused on internationalization
and key enhancements you tell us you need to do your job."
