Ascend Communications, Inc., paid XXCAL Testing Laboratories, Inc., to rerun a test on its new MAX 6000 product. The same test which had Network World, March 23rd issue, giving its Blue Ribbon award to Bay Networks Versalar 5399 RAC Module. The retest showed that Ascend's new MAX 6000 couldn't beat Bay's Versalar 5399, even though it could have improved its standings of the original test, from fourth to second best. ----------------------------------------- The retest results: Bay Networks Versalar 5399 RAC average upload throughput- 99.1 Kbit/sec average download throughput- 67.8 Kbit/sec Ascend MAX 6000 average upload throughput- 98.6 Kbit/sec average download throughput- 56.3 Kbit/sec ------------------------------------------ Ascend wanted XXCAL to retest their new MAX 6000 because they had fixed the problem the box was having dropping calls during the original test. In the original test, Ascend's beta version of their new Max 6000 kept dropping calls just shy of finishing XXCAL test script, which called for 60 clients to be simultaneously transferring files. So, the MAX 6000 performance was averaged over 59 clients. Ascend did isolate the problem. They said that a timing clock on an inactive WAN port was left enabled when it should have been turned off. That could account for the poor showing, especially on download throughput.
