As a general rule of thumb, as a game gets long in the tooth Bishops are preferred to Knights.

This is because of their superior mobility. Earlier, Knights are marginally superior because of their ability to "cross" over pieces that lie between them and the target square.

As an example of the superiority in the endgame, it is easier to mate with 2 Bishops (alone, no other pieces other than Kings) than with a Bishop and Knight....the hardest mating combination in an endgame.

On the other hand, it is impossible to force a mate with just two Knights.
