Papows: Domino R5 "Prairie Dog" to permit "Real-Time Communication." Here's a clipping which I found to be very interesting. (This is not intended as a reply to G, who isn't worth talking to. I'm just new here and didn't know how to post any other way!) What do the rest of you make of this? ------------------------ OTC 03/24 1547 Lotus Unveils Prairie Dog At ICE, CORBA Support At ... BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, U.S.A., 1998 MAR 24 (Newsbytes) -- By Jacqueline Emigh, Newsbytes. At industry conferences on opposite ends of the North American continent today, Lotus [NYSE:IBM] officials divulged that the forthcoming Domino Release 5 will add CORBA (Common Object Request Broker) and IIOP (Internet Operability Protocol) support, as well as a new knowledge management technology codenamed Prairie Dog. In a keynote speech attended by Newsbytes at IDG's Internet Commerce Expo (ICE) today, Lotus President Jeff Papows told a packed audience in Boston that R5 will include a knowledge management technology codenamed Prairie Dog that incorporates asynchronous messaging as well as synchronous, "realtime" communications. Meanwhile, at the Java One show in San Francisco, Lotus officials were announcing that R5 will include CORBA and IIOP, to provide better support for distributed computing than the HTTP mechanisms of the current R 4.6. Speaking with Newsbytes at ICE in Boston over the phone from Java One in San Francisco, Paul Castiglione, product marketing manager for Lotus, and Paul Devendorf, Notes product manager, maintained that CORBA and IIOP will offer greater bandwidth, in addition to simultaneous support for Web- and non-Web-based networked applications. Also at JavaOne today, Lotus introduced the Lotus Java Toolkit, for writing and debugging Domino 4.6 agents. Lotus is located at lotus.com on the Web.
