And I think you're absolutely right. But the halo effect kicks in--people hear the word and hear BAD SWEAR WORD!!! regardless of context. Before 1503, the vulgar word for sex was swive. Do you think if I say, "Swive you!" I'll get suspended from SI? Just lacks a certain punch, doesn't it? I guess my objection to hearing BLANK is that so often it's used by people who lack the ability to use anything else. It's an all-purpose, all-inclusive and very meaningless adjective. I can't object to a considered, selective use (as in James Flynn's poem) on any grounds. Delicate sensibilities need to avert their eyes.
