I understand the dynamics of the whole thing, I think. I still don't really see the point. Seems to me that the MM's would make more and have a lower cost to ride the stock up, if that is indeed the direction it should be going. Eventually, a house of cards such as the one you described will collapse under its own weight, if there is justifiable reason for it to do so. At that point, the minuscule gains seen by the shorters will vanish in a puff of smoke.
I don't worry about crap like that. If it is illegal, they'll get caught eventually. If it is manipulation, they'll wind up in jail eventually. If the stock's a dog, they'll keep getting richer without risk. If it's a winner, most of their gains will vanish eventually.
