My ADSL installation is right out of the textbook. In th March 16 issue of Telephony a typical installation is described by Steven Shepard:

The Promise of ADSL

Modern telecom applications have outpaced the bandwidth capabilities of the local loop--and the strain will only get worse. Although many solutions have been proposed, ADSL may be the most logical answer

My remote ADSL transmission unit (ATU-R) is made by Amati. The central ADSL transmission unit (ATU-C) is a twelve port ethernet switch from Newbridge which feeds into a 36170 Newbridge ATM switch.

As in the article the ATU-C is connected to the access node, which is the aggregation point for broadband and narrowband data sources delivered from a DSL access multiplexer, or DSLAM.

BC Telecom (the local former monopoly, 51% owned by GTE) is being aggressive in its pricing since high-speed cable access here is available at $40 Canadian per month. My cost for the ADSL service is $64.95 Canadian per month with unlimited usage (no metering).

The connection at my house took 25-30 minutes by a BC Telecom employee.

The software was a one-floppy interface installation which took five minutes.

The unbelievable thing is that I am actually buying this service from my ISP, but other than help if I need it and the use of their e-mail account they are not involved. (I think they get $15/month out of the deal)

Hope this helps.

Bill
