Ratan, I am judging by my experience in the Seattle market last summer. I bought a Pentium II machine from Gateway (only because they could provide the configuration I wanted. Dell could not), and the price differential between the machine I got and the local box shops was less than $100. Considering warranties and service, Gateway was clearly the more cost effective choice.

Five years ago I bought a 486 from box shop, because the savings was nearly $500 over branded machines and I could get exactly the configuration I wanted.

Regards,

Paul
