>>>And I'm just looking at this from CheckFree's point of view, not quickens.

All comes back to 'button', 'button' who's got the 'button'

That Story contained 2 important items.....

That Bank of American was Co-Branding a Channel....

And you would be able to review, receive & pay bills....

Doesn't matter at this point who is doing what with whom...the most important thing is this is 'the standard'.

Ask yourself this....now that this Delivery Channel will include the ability to review, receive & pay bills.....How long do you think it will take Yahoo, Excite, Lycos, and InfoSeek, MSN, AOL and the rest of the Web Hubs to offer this as a free service to get more eyeballs?

They'll do it...just like e-mail...just to get eyeballs.

Now the next Question....Who's are the players from that Atlanta article who are going to compete for the publishing of bills?

And in the end it is going to be the consumers choice where he or she wants to pick up their bills from....just like e-mail....and nobody elses.

I'm looking at it from a consumers perspective.....don't tell me where I'm going to get my bills!

Ok, I'll answer my own question:

This could weaken Integrion (since BoA is part of Integrion). Other Banks may view this as Integrion's lack of strength. Other Banks may go out on their own joint ventures (with MSFDC?). But who knows, way too early to tell.

It appears that there could be a battle between INTUIT and other banks. (The war is for the hearts and minds and dollar$ of public.)
In any case, it's not clear that this is a bad thing for CKFR. One
thing a public brawl creates is a lot of noise and that may provide
more impetus for individuals to go electronic (billpay). Note that
CKFR has carefully avoided taking sides in this developing fray.
They will provide back-end processing for anyone who pays the freight.

Benny:

As Gates said in 1994, we are redefining money, which may not bode well for banks. As a medium of exchange, money is less and less identified with a physical space. Instead, it is identified with a brand, and that brand has less to do with security and trust and more to do with convenience than anything else. Therefore, whoever can best link information about where I get my money with where it goes gains market share. Some banks don't want to share these links because they define money the old way, and are afraid of seeing it go out the "door" and never come back.

Most large banks can see the future, however, and are working like crazy to close branches and set up huge, centralized "operations centers". These will be giant info banks which will look a lot like Checkfree, but still be balkanized, with fewer connections between billers and consumers than could be attained with an (inter?)national clearinghouse like CKFR. CKFR or MSFDC may end up as the "glue" which ties these centers together, or simply contract with the banks to provide the "medium of exchange" function they no longer want to provide. Float will no longer have value in a world of instant or timed payment, so many banks will step away from this part of the business. The snowball is rolling.
