Book.com promises to price all their books lower than any other on-line competitor. Wonder what Bertlesmann can do since they are essentially a one-stop shop: it goes from the author to the editing staff to the publisher (and in Bertlesmann case, they are the store) to you. If you cut out the distributor and the retailer, what kind of discounts can you offer and still make money? Or maybe they wouldn't want to do that for fear of hurting their publishing revenue?

But as a gimmick to gain marketshare in the fledgling internet arena (something that all the AMZN bulls have been hyping), this totally buries anything AMZN or any other retailer can do.

We, the consumers, win but at the cost of those nice little bookstores I fear. Guess the future of book selling will condense to superstores like B&N and Borders with a large # of online retailers who wage war on price and site features.
