Re: When you say strengthen intel's leadership w/in industry. That's like saying they are winning at home. They have to win on the road also. This is not a business where you could stay in business just by doing more of the same. You have to be creative (innovative) and perhaps expand your market with big bets.

Mary, thanks for those original thoughts. IMHO, intel is trying to open new market but without much success. For example, in LAN market, after Intel's two year's assault, 3com and Bay are still left standing almost unscratched. There are also video conference market, Network management software, flash memory, video card, etc... Please do not get me wrong. Intel is a strong contender in all those areas. But somehow they just can not knock their competitors out and get a home run. Even worse, it gave AMD and others some false hope to invade its home turf(Microsoft NEVER left any doubt about their will to dominate which is backed up by their actions). After more than 3 months false Ad from Apple, we did not see single counter action taken by Intel. It is no surprise after Intel's handling of Digital's suit and Compaq's betrayal. I call it "soft side of Intel".

Mary, >>>"We don't go see Junior Griffey hit singles."<<<

I don't see Griffey refusing any singles, though.

Last week, I put up an Intel web page that shows the target markets for four different performance class Pentium II's. The "celery", as you put it, which is Covington, and then Mendocino, is intended to be it for the low end, which is the basic desktop PC. Don't you want that low end? I do. In fact, I want all the money in the budget.
Look at the market segment matrix, normally called a roadmap, a little less than half way down the article, if you didn't before. Look again, even if you did. I want that low end. Don't you?

Speaking of home runs, what's wrong with Pentium Pro, Pentium II's at 300, 333, 400, 450 MHz, 100 MHz chipsets, one Teraflop supercomputers? OK, they probably didn't make anything on the last one.
