purething - actually the first reference has been incorrectly reported to be in the first verse of Beowulf. Here is the corrected translation;

Attend!
We have heard of the thriving of the throne of Denmark,
how the folk-kings flourished in former days,
how those royal athelings earned that glory.

- "folk-kings" - careful how you pronounce it ... hope taht helps .... Anon
