Russian fab automation project
orders Consilium MES software
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--Consilium Inc. here said it has received an order for manufacturing execution system software from the semiconductor fabrication development department of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which will use the technology to explore new fab automation concepts for the country's chip industry.

"Older fabs in Russia, dating from before 1990, mostly use paper-based systems," said a spokesman for Russia's Scientific Research Institute for System Analysis. "Now several new fabs are being built and must use computer-based tracking and execution systems to run efficiently and to satisfy their customers' demands.

"Our role is to create a working SMIF-type [mini-environment] development fab," the official explained. "We chose Consilium's WorkStream DFS manufacturing execution system because of its modular functionality and advanced process capability. It's possible to start with just tracking of lots, and then progress to a fully automated solution."

Consilium officials said they believe the development fab project will influence the direction of wafer processing in Russia. "We will support this installation from our Munich office which is already working with several other fabs in former eastern Europe," said Jeremy Read, Consilium's managing director for Europe.
